The quest of the Argonauts is not simply a myth…

Reviving the legend of Argos and JasonThe name Argonauts from Greek mythology brings to mind Jason’s quest with his ship the Argo, which took him from Iolcos (Volos) to Colchis on the Black Sea, in order to take the Golden Fleece. This myth is an allegory for the second big wave of colonization of the Black Sea by the Greeks. This quest took its name from Jason’s ship, the Argo, which was itself named after its builder, Argus. In 2004 a Mycenaean tomb came to light in the vicinity of Volos, and in this unexpected way a myth, that of the Argonauts, began to be less of a myth. Recently, four samples of gold found in Georgia on the Black Sea were examined in the Louvre and compared with some of the beads found on a necklace in the Mycenaean tomb of Volos. Both had the same local provenance and both items, the Greek and the Georgian, appear to have been made from alluvial gold that came from a river in Colchis. MORE

ARGO  THE HISTORY

Argo was constructed by the shipwright Argus, and its crew were specially protected by the goddess Hera. The best source for the myth is the Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius. According to a variety of sources of the legend, Argo was said to have been planned or constructed with the help of Athena. According to certain sources, Argo was the first ship to sail the seas. It was Athena who taught Tiphys to attach the sails to the mast, as he was the steersman and would need an absolute knowledge of the workings of the ship.[1] According to other legends, she contained in her prow a magical piece of timber from the sacred forest of Dodona, which could speak and render prophecies.
After her successful journey, Argo was consecrated to Poseidon in the Isthmus of Corinth. She was then translated into the sky and turned into the constellation Argo Navis.[2]

HOMERIC SHIP - ARGO - REPLICA CREATED BY REPPOS

939 BC. The ship Argo is built after the pattern of the long ship in which Danaus came into Greece: and this was the first long ship built by the Greeks. Chiron, who was born in the Golden Age, forms the Constellations for the use of the Argonauts; and places the Solstitial and Equinoctial Points in the fifteenth degrees or middies of the Constellations of Cancer, Chelae, Capricorn, and Aries. Meton in the year of Nabonassar 316, observed the Summer Solstice in the eighth degree of Cancer, and therefore the Solstice had then gone back seven degrees. It goes back one degree in about seventy two years, and seven degrees in about 504 years. Count these years back from the year of Nabonassae 316, and they will place the Argonautic expedition about 936 years before Christ. Sir Isaac Newton, A short chronicle: From the First Memory of things in Europe to the Conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great  MORE
